Super Powers from Subway!

November 28, 2009

It is a fact that Subway has some healthier options as a fast food restaurant than others such as McDonald’s and Burger King.  Although it may be a better menu to eat from, they also use the same advertising techniques as unhealthy fast food restaurants.  They only show the good things about Subway when mentioning that they have have 7 sandwiches that have under 6 grams of fat.  They also over exaggerate the positive effects of eating Subway when showing a lady eat a box of cookies and say, “It’s okay, I ate subway last night.”  What about everything else on the menu?  Why don’t they ever mention their Chicken and Bacon Ranch Sandwich that has 580 calories, 30 grams of fat, and 1400 milligrams of sodium all packed into a 6 inch sandwich.  They have healthy options, but who really orders a Veggie Delight sandwich?  Subway has a much healthier menu than others, but this shows that all fast food restaurants have things to hide.

Beware of Chicken!

November 14, 2009

It may be true that chicken has less fat than beef, but one extremely important thing is being overlooked.  Sodium.  Most people assume that ordering chicken at a fast food restaurant is much healthier than ordering a cheeseburger, but that’s not always the case.  Fast food restaurants use chicken as a healthier alternative to keep people interested, but most people do not realize that it can be just as harmful as the beef.  Chicken gets dry much faster than beef, therefor they use sodium to keep it moist.  As mentioned in my previous post, too much salt can lead to increased blood pressure which increases the risk of stroke.  Not only does it apply to fast food restaurants, but to restaurants such as Applebee’s and Chili’s.  Know what you are eating before you put it in your mouth!

Clogged Arteries!

November 5, 2009

Hungry Jack’s, a fast food chain, has a new burger called the ‘Double Angry Angus Burger’ in Australia.  The name fits it well, considering it rips your insides to shreds!  Not literally, but it contains 5.6 grams of salt compared to the 4 gram daily salt consumption set forth by the nations health authority.  Along with all the salt, it contains 26 grams of saturated fat.  Professor Bruce Neal, chair of the Australian Division of World Action on Salt and Health (AWASH), has accused the fast food chain of recklessness and undermining the broader industry’s effort to cut salt from their menu offerings.  When there is too much salt in ones diet, it can lead to high blood pressure, which is the main cause of cardiovascular disease and stroke. If you like clogged arteries and high blood pressure, then Hungry Jack’s is the place for you!
